SPORT & SPECIAL INTERESTS
by James Vos
Grahamstown’s numerous sports clubs cater for any recognized
sport in South Africa and there are over 50 social interest
groups which should ensure sufficient leisure activities
for even the most obscure tastes.
One can participate in sports at either a social or
competitive level, be they through the Rhodes University
or local Grahamstown sports clubs. The university subsidizes
32 different sports clubs on campus and there are over
60 clubs in the community ranging from angling to yoga
and yachts. The Centre for Sports Development in Grahamstown,
under the care of former South African athlete, Fiona
Williamson, brings sport to people who are unable to
enjoy the resources provided through the university
or via the Grahamstown sports societies.
The wide variety and easy accessibility of the sporting
and special interest clubs in Grahamstown adds greater
diversity and entertainment to a city rich in culture,
history and interest. |
