CLIMATE AND VEGETATION
Grahamstown lies at the intersection of four different
climatic zones, hence its unpredictable weather and
the possibility of experiencing all four seasons in
one day. Despite this variability, the city has a moderate
climate with annual average temperatures ranging from
9 to 23oC. The hottest and wettest months are December
to March and the coldest June to August.
This variable climate supports a wonderful diversity
of flora and with the exception of desert, all the major
vegetations types of South Africa are found within 150
km radius of Grahamstown. Four of these vegetation types
(biomes) border on the city: the Cape fynbos, Karoo
or sub desert, subtropical thicket and grasslands (sourveld,
sweetveld or grassveld). |
